The Next Chapter Project

We are in the process of finalizing design plans for a large-scale project to create a space that is inspiring, welcoming, safe, and accessible.

The goals of The Next Chapter project:

  • Make the building accessible so that everyone may have equal opportunities to experience all that the Athenaeum offers.
  • Protect our historic collections and building with upgrades that will serve generations to come.
  • Reconfigure interior spaces to meet the demand for work, meeting, and programming spaces that serve more adults and children.
  • Establish financial reserves for the future.

Our Audacious Goal: $2,000,000

We have raised more than $450,000, including funds from the Salem Community Preservation Committee and the Massachusetts Cultural Council.

We need your help to realize the dream of making all these building improvements. Your philanthropic support will make a significant impact.

Our Plan

Why are we embarking on the largest project in our history?

It’s time! The Salem Athenaeum’s historic building in the heart of the McIntire District was built in 1907. Much has changed in the past 118 years in the way that our members, program audiences, and visitors use the Athenaeum. The library serves as a resource for the whole community, and we want to remove barriers to access.

What is our plan?

  • Create an alternative welcoming path to the front door that is accessible to all.
  • Adapt the first floor to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act, including an accessible restroom.
  • Add an elevator.
  • Improve the lower level with new restrooms and amenities to support library and program operations.
  • Install an HVAC system to protect collections, and improve building ventilation and temperature control.
  • Protect the building and the collections with a fire suppression system.
  • Improve lighting, safety, and security throughout the building.
  • Preserve the historic character of the building while updating furnishings and functionality.

Progress to Date

  • Landworks Studio in Salem has designed an accessible and welcoming path into the building.
  • In May 2025, the Salem Historical Commission approved the exterior plan for a walkway, ramp, and bridge system so that everyone may enter the front door.
  • We have conducted a comprehensive study of all building and infrastructure systems to inform and create a project design and work plan that meets our building needs, while also meeting all historical preservation and Americans with Disabilities Act requirements.

We are finalizing the interior and exterior building plans during the regulatory review process with the Massachusetts Historical Commission and the Massachusetts Architectural Access Board.
