SUMMARY:These Truths Discussion Series: Part 1 — "The Idea"
DESCRIPTION:Commemorate our 250th anniversary by exploring the founding principles\nof the United States…and how we live up to them \nThis four-part discussion series will revolve around the book These Truths: A History of the U.S. Constitution by Jill Lepore. Each session will be on a different theme (The Idea\, The People\, The State\, The Machine) linked to readings from sections of the book. \nLepore’s expansive study of the nation in one volume allows us to follow a single narrative that touches on all the essential issues and periods of American history. \nSessions will be facilitated by Dr. Andrew Darien\, Associate Dean for the College of Arts & Sciences at Salem State University. Dr. Darien has taught as a history professor since 2004\, specializing in modern U.S. History. When possible\, he will invite guest experts to participate in the discussion sessions. \nThe Athenaeum has compiled a list of additional recommended readings on American history and ideals to supplement the discussion. These books are tagged in the Athenaeum’s Library Thing catalog under the heading “Citizen Bookshelf\,” which can be accessed here. Some of these are displayed in the reading room in the area marked with a Citizen Bookshelf sign. Send us your suggestions for the list. \nHas America lived up to its founding “truths”? Let’s read and find out together! \nPart I — The Idea (1492–1799) \nApril 23 at 7:00 p.m. \nChapters 1–4: \n1. The Nature of the Past (pp. 3–30) \n2. The Rulers and the Ruled (pp. 31–71) \n3. Of Wars and Revolutions (pp. 72–108) \n4. The Constitution of a Nation (pp. 109–152) \nThis section traces the origins of American civic identity\, showing how political equality\, natural rights\, and popular sovereignty emerged amid colonization\, slavery\, and revolution. Readers learn how debates over governance and rights shaped foundational institutions and citizenship itself — critical context for thoughtful citizens today. \nAttend any or all sessions! \nApril 23\, June 11\, September 24\, and December 3 \nAll discussions start at 7:00 p.m. \nView the reading schedule here! \nAndrew Darien is Associate Dean for the College of Arts & Sciences at Salem State University\, where he has taught as a history professor since 2004. He specializes in modern United States history and oral history. He is the author of Becoming New York’s Finest: Race\, Gender and the Integration of the NYPD\, 1935-1980\, and Building the Sacred and the Progressive: A History of Temple Sinai in Brookline. He has been the project director for Student\, Citizen\, and Soldier\, which has recorded and shared dozens of interviews with college veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. He most recently completed an oral history project to document the queer history of Lynn through a series of gay and lesbian bars going back to the early 20th century. The American Association of State and Local History awarded Darien and United Lynn Pride the Corey Award for the best grassroots public history project in 2025. \nFree to all. Registration recommended. \nTicket Policies\nTickets are refundable if canceled up to 24 hours before the event. \nBy attending an event at the Salem Athenaeum\, you may be photographed or recorded. SUMMARY:Colin Woodard — Nations Apart: The Past & Future of Our Democracy
DESCRIPTION:Historian and bestselling author Colin Woodard will present the 2026 Adams Lecture on his latest book\, Nations Apart: How Clashing Regional Cultures Shattered America. In this timely study\, Woodard reveals how centuries-old regional differences have brought American democracy to the brink of collapse while also presenting a powerful story that can bridge our cultural divisions and save the republic. \nThe colonial era settlement patterns and the cultural geography they left behind are at the root of our  political polarization\, economic inequality\, and public health crises. Woodard will discuss his road map to right the country based on the document that first bound our regions together: the Declaration of Independence. \nColin Woodard a New York Times bestselling author and historian\, is the director of Nationhood Lab at Salve Regina University’s Pell Center for International Relations and Public Policy\, where he studies the problems of United States nationhood and how to solve them. SUMMARY:Love and Loss After Wounded Knee — Julie Dobrow and Kiara Vigil
DESCRIPTION:Like many star-crossed lovers\, it was amazing that Elaine Goodale and Ohíye S’a\, Dr. Charles Alexander Eastman\, ever met in the first place. She was white woman from a remote corner of the Berkshires\, who went west in 1884 to teach Native American children; he was a Santee Dakota who’d gone to Dartmouth College and the Boston University School of Medicine. Somehow\, they both ended up at the Pine Ridge Agency in South Dakota in December of 1890 and fell in love at first sight. Three weeks later\, they announced their engagement. Then the Wounded Knee Massacre changed everything. \nAuthor\, biographer and Tufts University professor Julie Dobrow’s new book\, Love and Loss After Wounded Knee: A Biography of an Extraordinary Interracial Marriage\, tells the complicated story of the Eastman’s lives. Joining Professor Dobrow to talk about the Eastmans and their unusual marriage will be Professor Kiara Vigil\, Associate Professor of American Studies and Dean of New Students at Amherst College. Professor Vigil’s work centers on the history of representations of and by Native peoples from the Americas. In addition to her historical work\, she’s currently working on a project about Native people in US films and television\, and with support from the Mellon Foundation’s “New Directions” fellowship\, studying the language of her Dakhota ancestors. \nJulie Dobrow previously visited the Salem Athenaeum 2019 to discuss her book on Emily Dickinson\, After Emily: Two Remarkable Women and the Legacy of America’s Greatest Poet. \nTickets: Free to Members | $20 Non-members | Card to Culture \nThis is a Zoom event. The access link will be sent to all registrants an hour before the program starts. \nSign up\nTicket Policies\nTickets are refundable if canceled up to 24 hours before the event. \nBy attending an event at the Salem Athenaeum\, you may be photographed or recorded. SUMMARY:The Last Great Territory Big Band
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special evening of jazz-inspired conversation with Carmen Fields\, award-winning journalist and daughter of bandleader Ernie Fields\, and renowned saxophonist Henley Douglas Jr. \nFrom the 1920s–1960s territory bands crisscrossed the United States and helped disseminate popular music. Very few made recordings\, so their vital contributions to jazz music are often overlooked. The Tulsa-based Ernie Fields (1904-97) led one of the best territory bands\, traveling from town to town performing jazz and swing music to countless fans. In her book\, Going Back to T-Town: The Ernie Fields Territory Big Band\, Carmen Fields tells the story of her father Ernie Fields’ musical career\, which began less than a decade after Tulsa’s infamous 1921 race massacre. She details the successes\, disappointments\, and perseverance that kept Ernie’s band alive from the early jazz era to the 1960s. This enlightening account reveals how Ernie navigated the hurdles of racial segregation during the Jim Crow era and built a musical career that included a top-ten hit in 1959 (a rock-and-roll rendition of In the Mood) and performances at the famed Apollo Theater in New York. At a time when most other territory bands had faded\, the Ernie Fields Orchestra continued to perform. Sit in on this session for music lovers and learn about a before-now missing piece of American popular music and African American history. \nAn Emmy Award-winning fixture of the greater Boston journalism community for over 30 years\, Carmen Fields has broad experience in both print and broadcast journalism; journalism education and corporate and non-profit media relations. Longtime producer and host of the public affairs program Higher Ground on WHDH-TV\, Boston\, Fields is also a SAG-AFTRA affiliated actor and voice-over artist. The Tulsa\, OK native earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Lincoln University (MO) and a master’s degree in broadcast journalism from Boston University. Other achievements include Harvard University’s Nieman Fellowship and an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Salem State University. \nA renowned sax player\, Henley Douglas Jr. has been performing professionally for over thirty years. He’s formed and led countless bands and his music appears on over a dozen albums including a CD of original music as a soloist. He’s shared the stage with everyone from the Neville Brothers to the Red Hot Chili Peppers to Laverne Baker. In 2007\, Henley co-founded the Salem Jazz and Soul Festival along with his friend Larry Claflin. The 501c3 nonprofit organization produces a popular series of free concerts for the public and raises funds for music education programs in schools and youth programs on the North Shore of Boston. His music is featured on the upcoming reggae documentary “Reggae in the Ruff.” Learn more about Henley here. \nTickets: Free to Members | $20 Non-members | Card to Culture \nThis is a hybrid event. Zoom link will be sent to all registrants an hour before the program starts. \nSign up\nTicket Policies\nTickets are refundable if canceled up to 24 hours before the event. \nBy attending an event at the Salem Athenaeum\, you may be photographed or recorded.
