SUMMARY:The Last Navigator with Steve Thomas
DESCRIPTION:In 1983 and 1984\, Steve Thomas spent eleven months on Satawal Island and in the Western Carolines as an apprentice to Mau Piailug\, then one of the last paliuw captains fully initiated in the Talk of Navigation\, the closely guarded\, ancient practices around reading the cosmos and the seas. \nHe chronicled his experiences and the navigational techniques in the book The Last Navigator\, first published in 1987\, and a documentary film of the same title for PBS in 1988. Now some forty years on he has updated the stories with a new generation of Satawalese islanders and researchers in the revised and fully illustrated edition of The Last Navigator.  \nThis lecture\, richly illustrated with Steve’s photographs\, will take us into a world of ocean navigation largely unknown to the West\, a world in which the traditional navigator’s only directional tools are the stars\, the ocean swells and the flight paths of birds. \nSteve Thomas is familiar to television viewers as the two-time Emmy award-winning host of This Old House\, Renovation Nation\, and Save Our History. But he is also an experienced blue water sailor. Beginning in 1977\, he sailed a 43-foot wooden sloop from England to San Francisco via the Panama Canal\, Galapagos\, Marquesas\, and Hawaii. In the early 1980’s\, he journeyed to the remote Micronesian island of Satawal to learn the ancient technique of star path navigation\, an experience that resulted in this book as well as a documentary for the PBS series Adventure. \nTickets: Free to Members | $20 Non-members | Card to Culture \nThis is a hybrid event. SUMMARY:Storytelling: The Nature of Mothers
DESCRIPTION:Salem Athenaeum’s writing committee celebrates Mother’s Day with a collection of true stories about motherhood in all its forms. Come hear local friends and neighbors share their stories live\, with very few notes (if any)! \nBring your mother to this event and make her proud. \nStorytellers include: Zoe Culbertson\, Anusia Gillespie\, Felicia S. Pierce\, Katie Rogers (host)\, and Jacquie Valatka \nZoe Culbertson is an acupuncturist\, meditation teacher and poet who has published work in Island Sky Journal\, Wild Roof Journal\, Beyond Words\, Action\, Spectacle\, Wildfire and printed two chapbooks (Become and The Wake) on a letterpress using her own handmade paper through Persephone Press.  She is a founding member of the Marblehead (MA) Poets Group where she lives by the sea with her family. She runs Seaside Family Acupuncture in Marblehead where she is also a licensed herbalist and shiatsu practitioner and offers acupuncture in an integrative clinic at the NeighborhoodPACE program. Zoe is passionate about art\, nature and supporting community. \n \nAnusia Gillespie is an author\, podcast host\, and former legal-tech executive who now writes and speaks about the decisions that shape our lives. After a decade working at the intersection of law\, business\, and technology—including a leadership role during a $1B legal AI acquisition—she turned to storytelling to explore what she calls the “Soul Toll”: the hidden cost of the commitments we make. Her debut motivational fiction novel\, Soul Toll\, was written in part for her son\, Raphael. Its dedication reads\,“Always\, fight for your light.” Becoming a mother gave her the urgency to bring the book into the world and build a life where her “yeses” make space for what matters most. \nKatie Naoum Rogers is a poet\, educator\, writer\, editor\, and mother. She previously taught ELA in public school in Salem and in New York City and currently is a curriculum director for a major education publisher specializing in K-12 ELA. Her poetry for adults has been published in B.E. Quarterly\, The L Magazine\, and MER. Her poetry for children has been published in Abe’s Peanut in collaboration with the artist Julia Norton. Her chapbook I Wouldn’t Have Thought of It This Morning was selected as the 2010 New School Chapbook Award Series winner by poet Matthew Rohrer and she was the winner of the Marblehead Festival of the Arts poetry contest in 2024. Her teaching philosophy is rooted in inclusivity and antiracist teaching practices. \nFelicia S. Pierce is a wife\, mother\, and Chief Executive Officer of North Shore Community Development Coalition Inc.\, whose mission is to invest in neighborhoods to create thriving communities\, and a lifelong advocate for community\, equity\, and opportunity. With more than 20 years of experience in community and youth development\, she has shaped pathways for countless young people\, serving as a “community mother” to many through her years with YouthBuild and beyond. Beyond her professional role\, Felicia is deeply committed to service\, giving her time and leadership to nonprofit boards and community initiatives that reflect her belief in lifting as we climb. Her own path to motherhood\, shaped by love\, patience\, and purpose\, deeply informs how she leads and shows up for others. Today\, she carries those experiences into her work\, building not just housing\, but spaces where people can grow\, belong\, and thrive. A community-acclaimed storyteller and lover of life\, Felicia also serves in her local church through children’s ministry and the prayer team\, grounding her work in faith\, connection\, and purpose \nJacqueline “Jacquie” Valatka is a dynamic Finance Manager\, business strategist\, and community advocate known for her ability to strengthen organizations through thoughtful analysis\, process improvement\, and innovation. Born and raised in Nairobi\, Kenya\, Jacquie’s global perspective was shaped early through an extraordinary academic journey spanning four educational systems: the Kenya KCE\, London GCE\, the French Baccalaureate\, and a year in the United States as one of eight exchange students representing Kenya. Her work includes involvement in public art initiatives\, where she serves as a mural ambassador and artist\, helping to foster connection and storytelling through shared creative experiences. Beyond her professional work\, Jacquie is deeply committed to community building\, cultural exchange\, and the arts. She lives in Salem with her husband\, Joseph\, and their two children. This special event for National Poetry Month will highlight new writing by several authors who are members of the Athenaeum or North Shore residents — the poetry of your talented neighbors. Join us to get a taste of their work\, explore their books\, talk writing. Most authors will have copies of their books will be available for purchase too! \nCheck back here for updates to the line-up! \nKali Lightfoot\, is a queer poet. Her poems in journals and anthologies\, have been nominated for Pushcart prizes and Best of the Net. Before retirement she worked as Executive Director of the National Resource Center for Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes. Her first book\, Pelted by Flowers (CavanKerry Press) was chosen a “Must Read” by the Massachusetts Center for the Book. Second book\, Big Band Night at the Good Life Bar\, is available from Moon Pie Press. \nCasey Lynn Roland is a writer\, artist\, and maker from Peabody\, Massachusetts\, and who also spends much of her time on Lake Winnipesaukee—her poetry attempts to reconcile her relationships to those places\, the people in them\, and how they’re always changing. If the House is Inclined to Collapse is her first full length poetry publication\, conceptualized during her time at the University of New Hampshire\, where she earned an MFA in Poetry in 2020. Her work has previously appeared in Plainsongs\, Red Ogre Review\, Rougarou Journal\, West Trade Review\, and Soundings East among others. Varnavas (1973-2022)\, an award-winning journalist and editor for The Beverly Citizen\, was a gifted and accomplished poet\,with publications in Amethyst Review\, Bellevue Literary Review\, Blast Furnace\, End Times\, Margie\, The New Guard\, Oberon\, and Oddball Magazine. Melissa earned an MFA from the Solstice program at Pine Manor College and was active in Tin Box Poets of Swampscott and the Salem Writers Group. After she succumbed to breast cancer at age 48\, a committee from Tin Box\, including her husband Chris Terrell\, assembled\, selected\, arranged. and edited her poems and oversaw the design\, production\, and publication of Instructions for Performing Cartwheels\, released in December 2025. \nReading for Melissa Varnavas will be Margaret Eckman and Cathryn Keefe O’Hare: \nAn editor by trade\, Margaret Eckman has come to love the rigor poetry demands—telling a complete story in a few short lines. Her poems have appeared in several publications. She’s had the privilege of working with the committee from Tin Box Poets to collect Melissa Varnavas’s extraordinary poems and present them to the world in the book Instructions for Performing Cartwheels. \nCathryn Keefe O’Hare is a poet\, former newspaper reporter and editor\, and a retired communications director. She has roots in a small town on Boston’s South Shore\, went to college in New York and moved to Boston’s North Shore after her marriage. She was director of the North Shore Poets’ Forum for more than 20 years and served as the treasurer of the Massachusetts State Poetry Society. DESCRIPTION:Commemorate our 250th anniversary by exploring the founding principles\nof the United States…and how we live up to them \nThis four-part discussion series will revolve around the book These Truths: A History of the U.S. Constitution by Jill Lepore. Each session will be on a different theme (The Idea\, The People\, The State\, The Machine) linked to readings from sections of the book. \nLepore’s expansive study of the nation in one volume allows us to follow a single narrative that touches on all the essential issues and periods of American history. \nSessions will be facilitated by Dr. Andrew Darien\, Associate Dean for the College of Arts & Sciences at Salem State University. Dr. Darien has taught as a history professor since 2004\, specializing in modern U.S. History. When possible\, he will invite guest experts to participate in the discussion sessions. \nThe Athenaeum has compiled a list of additional recommended readings on American history and ideals to supplement the discussion. Then we will welcome two local experts\, Barbara Warren and Steph Dilllon\, to talk in-person about how to put these ideas to work in your own North Shore backyard. \nFrom spotting invasive species and prepping your yard\, to finding the best native plants to support wildlife\, biodiversity\, and beauty in your garden\, there will be tips and takeaways for gardeners of all levels. Come with your questions for a Q+A to follow. \nBarbara Warren served as Executive Director of Salem Sound Coastwatch for twenty years and is currently Principal at Barbara Warren Environmental Consulting. She began the Greenscapes North Shore Coalition in 2007 to share environmentally friendly landscape practices to the residents of the North Shore\, such as removing invasive plants\, reducing lawn size\, and planting natives. DESCRIPTION:Laugh and learn new skills at Improv 101 — Say Yes! with Regina Millis. \nAn unscripted and unplanned performance might sound daunting at first\, but Improv is a time-honored theatrical tradition with roots back to 391 B.C. Offstage\, the form’s spontaneous nature is a proven tool in situations requiring creative solutions\, the development of new communication skills\, stress management\, and more. On top of all that\, it is just plain fun! \nThe class will consist of 4 weekly sessions with warm-up exercises\, word games\, body work\, and scenarios with the intention of working toward an optional performance on week 5. \nThe class is open to all skill levels\, ages 15 to 101. \nRegina Millis is a North Shore native with over 30 years of theater experience.
