SUMMARY:The Last Great Territory Big Band
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special evening of jazz-inspired conversation with Carmen Fields\, award-winning journalist and daughter of bandleader Ernie Fields\, and renowned saxophonist Henley Douglas Jr. \nFrom the 1920s–1960s territory bands crisscrossed the United States and helped disseminate popular music. Very few made recordings\, so their vital contributions to jazz music are often overlooked. The Tulsa-based Ernie Fields (1904-97) led one of the best territory bands\, traveling from town to town performing jazz and swing music to countless fans. In her book\, Going Back to T-Town: The Ernie Fields Territory Big Band\, Carmen Fields tells the story of her father Ernie Fields’ musical career\, which began less than a decade after Tulsa’s infamous 1921 race massacre. She details the successes\, disappointments\, and perseverance that kept Ernie’s band alive from the early jazz era to the 1960s. This enlightening account reveals how Ernie navigated the hurdles of racial segregation during the Jim Crow era and built a musical career that included a top-ten hit in 1959 (a rock-and-roll rendition of In the Mood) and performances at the famed Apollo Theater in New York. At a time when most other territory bands had faded\, the Ernie Fields Orchestra continued to perform. Sit in on this session for music lovers and learn about a before-now missing piece of American popular music and African American history. \nAn Emmy Award-winning fixture of the greater Boston journalism community for over 30 years\, Carmen Fields has broad experience in both print and broadcast journalism; journalism education and corporate and non-profit media relations. Longtime producer and host of the public affairs program Higher Ground on WHDH-TV\, Boston\, Fields is also a SAG-AFTRA affiliated actor and voice-over artist. The Tulsa\, OK native earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Lincoln University (MO) and a master’s degree in broadcast journalism from Boston University. Other achievements include Harvard University’s Nieman Fellowship and an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Salem State University. \nA renowned sax player\, Henley Douglas Jr. has been performing professionally for over thirty years. He’s formed and led countless bands and his music appears on over a dozen albums including a CD of original music as a soloist. He’s shared the stage with everyone from the Neville Brothers to the Red Hot Chili Peppers to Laverne Baker. In 2007\, Henley co-founded the Salem Jazz and Soul Festival along with his friend Larry Claflin. The 501c3 nonprofit organization produces a popular series of free concerts for the public and raises funds for music education programs in schools and youth programs on the North Shore of Boston. His music is featured on the upcoming reggae documentary “Reggae in the Ruff.” Learn more about Henley here. \nTickets: Free to Members | $20 Non-members | Card to Culture \nThis is a hybrid event. SUMMARY:Peter Hessler—Other Rivers: A Chinese Education
DESCRIPTION:More than two decades after teaching English during the early part of China’s economic boom\, Peter Hessler returned to Sichuan Province to instruct students from the next generation. At the same time\, Hessler and his wife enrolled their twin daughters in a local state-run elementary school\, where they were the only Westerners. Over the years\, Hessler had kept in close contact with many of the people he had taught in the 1990s. By reconnecting with these individuals—members of China’s “Reform generation\,” now in their forties\, Hessler gained a unique perspective on China’s incredible transformation. \nIn Peter Hessler’s hands\, China’s education system is the perfect vehicle for examining the country’s past\, present\, and future\, and what we can learn from it\, for good and ill. At a time when anti-Chinese rhetoric in America has grown blunt and ugly\, Other Rivers is a work of enormous empathy that rejects cheap stereotypes and shows us China from the inside out and the bottom up. As both a window onto China and a mirror onto America\, Other Rivers is a classic from a master of the form. \nPeter Hessler is a writer of narrative nonfiction\, an author of four books\, and one of the foremost western nonfiction writers about China today. Originally from Columbia\, Missouri\, he has spent most of his writing life overseas. In 1996\, he joined the Peace Corps\, which sent him to Fuling\, a small city in southwestern China. For two years\, he taught English and American literature at Fuling Teachers College\, an experience that eventually became the subject of his first book\, River Town (2001)\, which was followed by two others about China: Oracle Bones (2006)\, Country Driving (2010) that comprise his “China trilogy\,” covering the decade in which he lived in the country\, from 1996 until 2007. River Town won the Kiriyama Prize in 2001\, and Oracle Bones was a finalist for the National Book Award\, in 2006. \nSince 2000\, Hessler has been a staff writer at the New Yorker\, and he is also a contributing writer at National Geographic Magazine. Hessler won a National Magazine Award for “Instant Cities\,” a two-year study of a new factory town in China’s Zhejiang province\, which was published in National Geographic\, in 2007. He was named a MacArthur Fellow in 2011. Each of the books in the “China Trilogy” made the New York Times bestseller list. His latest book is Other Rivers: A Chinese Education.  \nTickets: Free to Members | $20 Non-members | Card to Culture \nThis is a hybrid event. Zoom link will be sent to all registrants an hour before the program starts. \nSign up\nThis event is presented in partnership with Salem State University. \nTicket Policies\nTickets are refundable if canceled up to 24 hours before the event. \nBy attending an event at the Salem Athenaeum\, you may be photographed or recorded.
